When you work for someone else, it can be such a relief to say to yourself, "Not my circus. Not my monkeys." Such a treat to acknowledge, when it's not your business, that you're not going to stress out or lose sleep about something because it's really not your problem anyway.
But when it is your business, then it IS your circus and, damn it, those ARE your monkeys.
It's a good problem to have, all in all, but still: sometimes that ringleading is overwhelming. Especially when the monkeys just won't stop.
That's the reason why I founded Do Your Thing, actually. Out of a sincere desire to lend a hand to all these brave impresarios directing their own three rings, building their businesses, making their lives.
And because I really, truly love the circus. Both the real one (yes, the real one) and the business one. I've dreamed of running away with the circus from the age of 4 or 5, watching the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey elephants parade down Geneva Avenue in San Francisco. A few years ago I realized that I’ve been running away with the circus my whole life, actually – as I was letting my creative ideas develop, gradually building exactly the life I always wanted, learning to stage-manage my own dreams into being.
Sure, those are your monkeys. Because this is YOUR circus.
It’s a lot of work, good solid work, the best kind, raising up your big top. Work that it’s really hard to do alone.
Which is why I’m here to help. So you can step up in your frock-coat or your fishnets and take the plunge, knowing the net is there.
